Cheng Chang’s practice investigates the relationship between human beings, plants, and ecological systems through a visual language in which biological categories continuously overlap.

His work frequently questions anthropocentric ideas that position humans as separate from, or superior to, other forms of life.

In Untitled03, this inquiry is expressed through organic structures that move between plant anatomy and bodily anatomy.

The dominant pink palette intensifies the corporeal associations of the painting. Soft rounded forms can suggest skin, tissue, organs, petals, or reproductive structures, while dark areas interrupt the composition like openings into deeper biological space.

This uncertainty is intentional.

Rather than illustrating a specific organism, Cheng Chang constructs a speculative body whose identity remains fluid. Plant and human forms appear to share the same visual grammar, suggesting that the distinction between species may be less absolute than conventional systems of classification imply.

The painting can therefore be read as an imagined stage of biological transformation—a space in which bodies mutate, species boundaries loosen, and different forms of life begin to merge.

Through Untitled03, Cheng Chang develops his broader interest in posthuman and multispecies thinking while preserving the emotional and sensory immediacy of painting.

Untitled03 expands Cheng Chang’s biomorphic language into a larger 40 × 40 cm composition dominated by layered pink, rose, muted red, cream, and dark green-black forms. At the center of the painting, broad organic structures converge around a lighter interior space. Rounded volumes, recessed shapes, and branching passages give the composition an anatomical quality, yet the image never settles into a recognizable body, flower, or organism. Instead, the work occupies an unstable territory between the botanical and the corporeal. Some passages resemble petals or fleshy plant tissue; others evoke membranes, cavities, muscles, or internal biological structures. These associations overlap rather than resolve, allowing the painting to function as an imagined living system. Compared with Cheng Chang’s smaller Untitled works, the expanded square format gives the forms more room to interact. The composition feels less like an isolated specimen and more like a cross-section of a larger organism or speculative habitat. The result is intimate yet spatial: a painting that invites the viewer to look inward at a form of life that seems familiar, but cannot be fully identified.
