Artwork Concept
Cheng Chang’s practice examines the relationship between humans, plants, and the wider ecological systems they inhabit.
His paintings frequently challenge anthropocentric ways of understanding nature. Instead of presenting plants as decorative or passive forms, Cheng imagines organic life as active, adaptive, and capable of developing beyond familiar biological boundaries.
In Untitled02, this idea appears through forms that seem simultaneously botanical and anatomical.
The branching structures can suggest roots or veins, while the rounded cavities and layered interior sections resemble cells, organs, seeds, or developing tissue. These visual associations remain deliberately unresolved.
This ambiguity is central to the work.
By allowing plant forms and bodily structures to visually overlap, Cheng Chang questions the boundary between human and non-human life. The painting suggests a speculative ecosystem in which biological identities are fluid rather than fixed.
The intense orange-yellow palette gives this imagined organism a sense of heat and vitality, making Untitled02 distinct from the cooler green and blue atmosphere of the preceding work.
Through this small-scale painting, Cheng transforms organic abstraction into a way of imagining alternative relationships between body, plant life, environment, and future forms of coexistence.
Artwork Story
Artwork Story
Untitled02 is a small original acrylic painting by Cheng Chang in which warm color, organic structure, and biomorphic abstraction converge within an intimate 15 × 15 cm format. Dominated by luminous yellow, orange, ochre, and earthy red, the composition unfolds through rounded forms, branching contours, and layered internal structures. Certain shapes recall petals, seed chambers, tissue, or anatomical sections, yet none resolves into a fixed biological subject. Instead, Cheng Chang allows these forms to exist between categories. A large segmented structure occupies the upper portion of the painting, while softer rounded forms gather below it. Curving outlines connect these areas, creating the impression of an evolving internal system rather than a conventional landscape or botanical study. The compact scale intensifies this sense of concentration. Rather than presenting an expansive environment, Untitled02 feels like a fragment extracted from an imagined organism—a close observation of growth, mutation, and biological transformation.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
As an original acrylic painting on canvas, Untitled02 should be displayed in a stable indoor environment away from direct sunlight, excessive humidity, and significant temperature fluctuations. Prolonged UV exposure may gradually affect the appearance of pigments over time. Avoid positioning the artwork close to radiators, fireplaces, heating systems, air-conditioning vents, or damp areas. For routine care, remove surface dust gently with a clean, soft, dry brush or microfiber cloth. Do not apply water, household cleaners, alcohol, solvents, or chemical sprays to the painted surface. Avoid touching the painted surface directly. When moving the artwork, handle it carefully by its edges or supporting structure. For long-term preservation, maintain moderate temperature and humidity and avoid rapid environmental changes.
