Cheng Chang’s practice is rooted in acrylic painting and an ongoing interest in the relationship between human development and the natural environment.

His work draws from ideas surrounding the Anthropocene, anthropocentrism, posthumanism, and multispecies coexistence. Rather than treating plants as passive background elements, he imagines them as active participants capable of mutation, migration, adaptation, and independent agency.

In this Untitled work, the human body is not explicitly represented, yet the elongated forms retain an anatomical quality. They resemble stems, tissue, organs, pods, or internal structures without resolving into any single category.

This ambiguity reflects Cheng Chang’s broader interest in breaking down established distinctions between human and plant life.

The painting can therefore be read as a small-scale vision of an emerging biological world—one in which familiar categories begin to dissolve and new forms of life quietly take shape.

Untitled condenses Cheng Chang’s biomorphic visual language into an intimate 15 × 15 cm format. The composition is built from elongated organic forms that rise vertically across the canvas in layered shades of green, turquoise, blue, grey, and muted violet. Darker contours separate the shapes while also binding them together, creating the impression of multiple living structures growing within the same enclosed space. Rather than representing a recognizable plant, the work approaches vegetation as an imagined biological system. The forms appear simultaneously botanical, anatomical, and unfamiliar—an ambiguity that is central to Cheng Chang’s practice. The small scale makes the painting feel especially concentrated. Color, contour, and growth are compressed into a compact field, allowing the viewer to encounter the work almost as a specimen: a fragment from a larger speculative ecosystem.
