Sketch Series II No. 04

This original work on paper explores layered abstraction, spatial compression, and the interaction between color and curved form.

In Siyuan Tan’s broader practice, the idea of “relationship” extends beyond cultural narrative and into the formal construction of an image. In Sketch Series II No. 04, that relationship is expressed through closely connected abstract shapes.

No form exists independently. Pink and violet fields press against red and orange passages, while narrow yellow accents appear between larger shapes, creating moments of separation and connection.

The composition is neither purely geometric nor entirely organic. Its smooth contours suggest natural movement, while its clearly defined color boundaries introduce a sense of structural discipline.

This tension reflects Tan’s interest in combining different visual systems within a single surface. Organic rhythm, decorative sensibility, and contemporary abstraction interact without resolving into a fixed hierarchy.

Through these nested forms, Sketch Series II No. 04 becomes a study of how visual relationships can create depth, pressure, and movement within a flat pictorial space.

Sketch Series II No. 04 develops a dense abstract composition through nested curves and interlocking fields of color. Magenta, pink, violet, orange, and yellow move across the page in layered bands that repeatedly fold inward and around one another. The forms appear to expand and contract at the same time, creating a strong sense of spatial compression. Unlike a conventional study built around a recognizable subject, this work allows the relationship between color and contour to determine the composition. Each shape is defined by the form beside it, producing a visual structure based on proximity, overlap, and tension. The repeated inward curves give the work a sense of accumulation. Color seems to gather into the center of the composition before opening outward again, creating a rhythm that is both controlled and fluid. As an original artist study, Sketch Series II No. 04 reveals Siyuan Tan’s experimentation with how abstract forms can generate depth and movement through repetition, layering, and chromatic contrast.
