This original work on paper examines chromatic rhythm, layered abstraction, and the relationship between movement and visual space.

Siyuan Tan’s broader practice often brings different cultural and formal systems into contact. In this study, however, those relationships are expressed through color itself.

Large organic curves overlap and redirect one another, creating a composition that feels both continuous and divided. Pink, violet, orange, and yellow operate as independent color fields, yet their boundaries remain interconnected.

This emphasis on visual relationship reflects Tan’s ongoing interest in coexistence. No single form dominates the composition; each gains meaning through the presence of the others.

The flowing contours also introduce a sense of bodily or environmental movement without resolving into a specific image. This ambiguity allows the work to remain open between abstraction, ornament, and organic form.

Through this process, Sketch Series II No. 03 becomes a study of how color can structure space, create rhythm, and generate visual tension through gradual transition rather than hard separation.

Sketch Series II No. 03 explores movement through layered color and continuously shifting form. The composition is built from broad, curving fields of magenta, pink, violet, orange, and yellow. These shapes appear to fold into one another, creating a sense of expansion and compression across the surface. Rather than relying on recognizable figures or symbols, Siyuan Tan allows the interaction between color and contour to drive the image. Each curved boundary guides the eye into the next, producing a visual rhythm that feels fluid, immersive, and constantly in motion. The warm palette gives the study an immediate intensity, while subtle tonal transitions soften the boundaries between adjacent forms. This combination of saturation and gradation allows the work to move between clearly defined structure and atmospheric color. As an original artist study, Sketch Series II No. 03 captures Tan’s experimentation with chromatic movement—how color can create depth, direction, and emotional tension without depending on narrative imagery.

Keep the work away from direct sunlight and prolonged exposure to strong artificial light, as excessive UV exposure may gradually affect the paper and colored surface. Display the artwork in a stable indoor environment away from excessive humidity, heat, and significant temperature fluctuations. Avoid placing it near radiators, fireplaces, air-conditioning vents, or damp areas. For long-term display, archival-quality framing materials and UV-protective glazing are recommended. Avoid direct contact between the artwork and non-archival materials. Do not touch the surface of the paper with bare hands. When handling is necessary, hold the work carefully by the edges with clean, dry hands or suitable protective gloves.
