This original work on paper examines geometric abstraction, vertical rhythm, and the relationship between structure and color.

Siyuan Tan’s practice frequently moves between historical visual references and contemporary abstraction. In this study, recognizable cultural symbols recede, allowing formal relationships to take a more central role.

The elongated vertical bands establish a strong structural framework, while the smaller colored forms interrupt that order. This contrast reflects Tan’s broader interest in “relationship”—how independent elements coexist, intersect, and transform one another within a shared space.

The clarity of the vertical forms also recalls aspects of hard-edge painting, while the softer transitions and irregular shapes prevent the composition from becoming purely geometric.

Through this balance, the work creates a dialogue between precision and spontaneity, structure and movement, containment and expansion.

Sketch Series II No. 02 therefore functions as a study in visual organization, demonstrating how abstract forms can generate tension and connection without relying on direct narrative imagery.

Sketch Series II No. 02 explores how vertical structure can organize color, movement, and visual tension. The composition is built around elongated yellow-green forms that extend through the page like architectural supports or abstract boundaries. Around their intersections, smaller shapes in blue, green, red, violet, and orange appear to gather, overlap, and project outward. Unlike a conventional figurative study, the work does not resolve into a single recognizable subject. Instead, Siyuan Tan allows color and structure to determine the rhythm of the image. The vertical elements create stability, while the angular colored forms introduce disruption and movement. Their interaction produces a composition that feels both ordered and unsettled. As an original artist study, the work records Tan’s investigation into how relatively simple geometric structures can generate spatial complexity. The page becomes a testing ground for proportion, balance, interruption, and chromatic contrast.
