This original work on paper explores organic abstraction, color relationships, and the interaction between fluid and structured forms.

Siyuan Tan’s practice frequently connects traditional visual culture with contemporary artistic languages. While many of his works incorporate recognizable symbols, this study moves toward abstraction, allowing shape, color, and spatial tension to carry the conceptual weight of the composition.

The flowing magenta and violet areas suggest organic growth or movement, yet they remain deliberately open to interpretation. Yellow forms cut through these larger fields, producing a sharper visual rhythm that recalls the clarity of hard-edge painting.

This coexistence of softness and structure reflects Tan’s wider interest in “relationship” as an artistic concept. Forms do not exist independently; they overlap, interrupt, support, and redefine one another.

The work therefore becomes a study of visual coexistence. Rather than illustrating cultural exchange literally, it explores how different aesthetic systems can occupy the same surface while maintaining their individual character.

Through this approach, Sketch Series II No. 01 transforms the sketch into a space for testing abstraction, chromatic tension, and new possibilities within Tan’s evolving visual language.

Large fields of magenta, pink, violet, and yellow move across the paper in curved, overlapping forms. Rather than describing a specific figure or object, Siyuan Tan allows color and contour to become the primary subjects of the work. The composition feels simultaneously fluid and controlled. Soft organic curves expand across the page, while sharper yellow passages interrupt the larger fields of color and create moments of visual tension. This balance between flowing form and structural clarity reflects Tan’s broader interest in bringing different visual traditions into contact. Decorative rhythm, contemporary abstraction, and hard-edged composition are allowed to coexist without being reduced to a single stylistic source. As an original artist study, the work captures a moment of experimentation in which Tan tests how color itself can establish relationships—between forms, spaces, and contrasting visual energies.

Keep the work away from direct sunlight and prolonged exposure to strong artificial light, as excessive UV exposure may gradually affect the paper and colored surface. Display the artwork in a stable indoor environment away from excessive humidity, heat, and significant temperature fluctuations. Avoid placing it near radiators, fireplaces, air-conditioning vents, or damp areas. For long-term display, archival-quality framing materials and UV-protective glazing are recommended. Avoid direct contact between the artwork and non-archival materials. Do not touch the surface of the paper with bare hands.
