Siyuan Tan often investigates the abstract idea of “relationship,” especially the ways individuals position themselves within cultural, social, and historical systems. In Sketch No. 08, that exploration turns inward.

The curled posture creates a boundary between the body and the outside world. It suggests a moment of retreat, but also one of preservation—an attempt to protect something internal from external pressure.

This bodily enclosure can be read in relation to Tan’s broader interest in migration, multicultural identity, and cultural displacement. When external surroundings change, the body can become one of the last spaces in which memory, language, and personal identity remain physically carried.

The repeated variations on the page show Tan testing how a single posture can move between figuration and abstraction. As the body becomes increasingly simplified, its emotional meaning remains intact.

Through this process, Sketch No. 08 transforms the human figure into a symbolic form of introspection, protection, and cultural memory.

Sketch No. 08 explores the human body in a state of inward withdrawal. Across the page, Siyuan Tan repeatedly studies a curled figure whose limbs fold toward the body, creating compact, enclosed silhouettes. Some versions remain close to figurative drawing, while others are simplified into almost abstract organic forms. The repeated posture gives the work a strong emotional tension. The body appears protected and vulnerable at the same time—contained within itself, yet visibly shaped by pressure, memory, and surrounding space. Rather than treating the figure as a conventional portrait, Tan focuses on posture as a form of psychological expression. The curve of the back, the folded limbs, and the enclosed composition become ways of suggesting introspection, self-protection, and internalized experience. As an original artist study, Sketch No. 08 captures a moment in which the human figure begins to move beyond anatomy and toward metaphor, transforming the body into a visual structure for thinking about identity, isolation, and emotional memory.
