This original work on paper explores ceramic form, ornament, and cross-cultural visual exchange through Siyuan Tan’s study of vessels and decorative structures.

Tan’s broader practice moves between painting, sculpture, and ceramics, and the vessel frequently becomes an important point of connection between these media. In Sketch No. 07, vase-like forms are reduced to outlines, proportions, openings, and silhouettes, allowing their structural logic to become visible.

The circular and framed elements recall the visual organization of traditional porcelain decoration, while the organic forms emerging from the vessels introduce a more fluid and contemporary language.

This dialogue reflects Tan’s interest in how visual traditions move across regions and historical periods. Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, Persian decorative framing, European export patterns, and modern abstraction can all coexist within the same conceptual field.

Rather than treating the ceramic vessel as a fixed historical artifact, Tan reimagines it as a flexible visual system—one that can connect craft, trade, migration, and contemporary artistic practice.

Sketch No. 07 focuses on the vessel as both a functional form and a carrier of cultural memory. Across the page, Siyuan Tan studies a series of vase-like structures, pedestal forms, circular openings, and organic shapes that rise from or interact with the vessels. Some compositions remain close to ceramic objects, while others begin to transform into more abstract arrangements. The repeated silhouettes suggest a process of visual testing: how far can the shape of a traditional vessel be altered while still retaining its cultural associations? For Tan, the vessel is never simply an object. It carries histories of craftsmanship, exchange, trade, ornament, and domestic life. Its form can evoke Chinese ceramics and blue-and-white porcelain, while its decorative structure also opens toward Persian framing devices, export patterns, and cross-cultural visual systems. As an original artist study, Sketch No. 07 documents the moment when an everyday ceramic form becomes a conceptual structure—one capable of holding not only flowers or objects, but also layers of historical and cultural meaning.

Display the artwork in a stable indoor environment away from excessive humidity, heat, and significant temperature fluctuations. Avoid placing it near radiators, fireplaces, air-conditioning vents, or damp areas. For long-term display, archival-quality framing materials and UV-protective glazing are recommended. Avoid direct contact between the artwork and non-archival materials. Do not touch the surface of the paper with bare hands.
