Artwork Concept

Overgrown examines uncontrolled botanical expansion as a metaphor for the shifting balance between human civilization and the natural world.

Created in acrylic on canvas, the painting develops an imagined ecosystem in which organic structures proliferate beyond familiar boundaries. Plants are no longer decorative or passive elements within a human-defined landscape; they become active forces that occupy space, alter environments, and establish their own forms of order.

The work reflects Cheng Chang’s ongoing exploration of anthropocentrism and speculative ecology. By allowing botanical forms to grow beyond conventional classifications and spatial limits, the artist questions the assumption that nature can always be organized, controlled, or contained.

In Overgrown, excess growth becomes a form of ecological agency. Expansion, mutation, and adaptation gradually transform the environment, suggesting a future in which the distinction between constructed space and natural habitat becomes increasingly unstable.

Through surreal organic imagery, the painting invites viewers to imagine what happens when nature no longer remains within the boundaries humanity has created for it.

Artwork Story

Overgrown begins with a familiar image: nature continuing to grow after human order begins to recede. Roots extend beyond their boundaries, vegetation occupies abandoned spaces, and organic structures gradually obscure the divisions once imposed upon them. Cheng Chang transforms this process into an imagined ecological scene where growth is no longer contained by human expectations. Within the work, botanical forms appear to multiply, expand, and move beyond their original limits. What might initially seem excessive becomes a different kind of order—one shaped by the logic of living systems rather than by human control. The title Overgrown captures this moment of transition. It suggests a world in which nature has exceeded the boundaries assigned to it and begun to reclaim space on its own terms. Rather than presenting this expansion as decline or disorder, Cheng Chang imagines it as the emergence of a new ecological condition: one in which plants become increasingly visible, autonomous, and capable of reshaping their surroundings.
