Mutation explores biological transformation and the emergence of unfamiliar life through Cheng Chang’s speculative botanical language.

Created in acrylic on canvas, the work brings together plant-inspired structures and imagined organic forms to challenge fixed distinctions between species. Botanical characteristics appear altered and recombined, suggesting an organism evolving beyond the categories traditionally used to understand the natural world.

The painting reflects the artist’s interest in the Anthropocene, posthumanism, and the changing relationship between humanity and nature. Instead of treating plants as passive subjects shaped exclusively by their environments, Mutation imagines them as adaptive agents capable of developing new identities and modes of existence.

Familiar botanical structures begin to shift, merge, and develop characteristics that resist conventional classification. Within the intimate square format of Mutation, this transformation feels concentrated and immediate—as though the viewer is witnessing a new organism at the precise moment its identity begins to change.
