Artwork Concept
Artwork Concept
Inner Mutation belongs to Cheng Chang’s broader artistic concept, “Plant Rebellion,” a body of work that investigates the shifting relationship between humanity, plants, and the ecological systems they inhabit.
The artist is fascinated by the visual similarities between botanical structures and the human body. Roots can resemble veins and nervous systems, while stems, branches, and organic growth patterns can evoke bones, limbs, and internal organs.
By exaggerating and merging these forms, Cheng Chang creates unfamiliar organisms that exist somewhere between the human body and the botanical world.
The work challenges anthropocentric ideas that position humanity as the dominant force within nature. Instead, it imagines plants as autonomous participants in a future ecosystem—organisms capable of evolving, migrating, adapting, and developing forms beyond established classifications.
Within this speculative world, mutation is not presented simply as biological distortion. It becomes a symbol of transformation and coexistence.
The strange botanical forms depicted in Inner Mutation suggest a world in which the boundaries between human and plant, organism and environment, nature and civilization are gradually dissolving.
Artwork Story
Artwork Story
This contemporary acrylic painting is part of the artist’s ongoing “Plant Rebellion” series, a body of work exploring the evolving relationship between humanity, nature, and imagined future ecosystems. Inspired by the concepts of the Anthropocene, posthumanism, and multispecies coexistence, the artwork challenges the traditional human-centered view of the natural world. By combining botanical forms with elements of human anatomy, the artist creates strange, hybrid organisms that exist somewhere between plant, body, and unknown species. The work draws particular inspiration from the vitality of plants—their roots, growth patterns, adaptability, and ability to survive within constantly changing environments. Through exaggerated forms and vivid color, familiar natural structures are transformed into a speculative visual language. Rather than depicting plants as passive objects, the painting imagines them as active participants in shaping the future. They mutate, migrate, adapt, and develop new forms of existence beyond established human classifications. Through this surreal botanical world, the artwork invites viewers to reconsider the boundaries between human and nature, organism and environment, civilization and ecology. Part science fiction, part ecological imagination, this piece presents a vision of a future in which nature is no longer simply controlled or observed by humanity, but becomes an independent force capable of reshaping the world.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
This artwork is created with acrylic paint on canvas. To preserve its color, surface, and overall condition over time, display it indoors in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and high humidity. Avoid placing the artwork near radiators, fireplaces, air-conditioning vents, or areas with frequent temperature changes. Prolonged exposure to strong UV light may gradually affect the original colors of the painting. For routine care, gently remove surface dust with a clean, soft, dry brush or microfiber cloth. Do not use water, household cleaners, alcohol, or chemical products directly on the painted surface. Avoid touching the painted surface with bare hands, as natural oils and moisture may leave marks over time. When moving the artwork, handle it carefully by the frame or outer edges whenever possible. With proper care and suitable indoor display conditions, your acrylic painting can retain its color, texture, and visual character for many years.
