Artwork Concept

Entangle explores the complex relationships that emerge when different forms of life grow into, around, and through one another. Through interwoven botanical structures and surreal organic forms, Cheng Chang imagines an ecosystem in which individual organisms can no longer be understood in isolation.

Created in acrylic on canvas, the work reflects the artist’s continuing interest in plant vitality, biological transformation, and the shifting boundaries between species. Roots, branches, and unfamiliar organic structures appear to connect and overlap, suggesting a network of living systems shaped by coexistence rather than separation.

Within this imagined environment, entanglement becomes both a physical condition and a metaphor for ecological interdependence. Human activity, plant life, and the surrounding environment are presented as interconnected forces, each capable of influencing and transforming the others.

Rather than depicting nature as something external to humanity, Entangle invites viewers to consider a more fluid ecological future—one in which survival, adaptation, and transformation emerge through relationships between multiple forms of life.

Artwork Story

Entangle begins with the idea that no living organism truly exists alone. In nature, roots cross beneath the soil, vines wrap around neighboring plants, and entire ecosystems are formed through countless visible and invisible connections. Cheng Chang draws from these relationships to imagine a world in which the boundaries between individual life forms gradually disappear. Within the painting, botanical structures seem to grow toward one another, overlap, and become inseparable. What begins as an encounter develops into a shared system of growth, tension, dependence, and transformation. The title Entangle reflects this condition of being connected beyond easy separation. Rather than treating entanglement as disorder, the work presents it as a natural state of coexistence—one in which each organism is continually shaped by the presence of others. Through this imagined ecological scene, Cheng Chang invites the viewer to consider a broader question: where does one life form end and another begin when all living systems are already interconnected?
