Collapse explores ecological breakdown, instability, and regeneration through Cheng Chang’s speculative botanical language.

Created in acrylic on canvas, the painting considers what happens when familiar biological and environmental structures begin to fail. Organic forms appear to fragment and reorganize, suggesting that collapse can function not only as destruction, but also as a catalyst for transformation.

The work reflects the artist’s broader interest in the relationship between humanity and natural systems. Within the Anthropocene, environments are increasingly shaped by disturbance, intervention, and rapid change. Rather than depicting nature as permanently balanced or stable, Collapse imagines an ecosystem continuously negotiating disruption.

In this context, botanical life becomes resilient and unpredictable. Existing forms may disappear, while unfamiliar structures emerge from their remains.

Through surreal organic imagery, Collapse invites viewers to consider the boundary between breakdown and renewal—and whether the dissolution of one ecological order might create the conditions for another to begin.

Collapse begins at the moment when an established structure can no longer sustain itself. In nature, collapse does not necessarily signal an ending. Fallen trees become habitats, decaying matter returns nutrients to the soil, and disrupted ecosystems create conditions from which new forms of life may emerge. Cheng Chang draws on this cyclical process to imagine breakdown as part of a larger biological transformation. Within the work, organic structures appear unstable, compressed, or in the process of losing their familiar form. Yet this instability also creates possibility. As one structure dissolves, another may begin to develop in its place. The intimate scale of Collapse concentrates this tension between destruction and regeneration. The viewer encounters a biological world caught between two states—no longer what it once was, but not yet transformed into what it may become. Rather than presenting collapse as a final condition, Cheng Chang treats it as a threshold: a point where existing systems give way and a different ecological order becomes possible.
