Artwork Concept

This original figurative sketch explores movement, urban identity, and bodily attitude through a forward-leaning male figure.

Zheng Hao’s The Can Archive treats portraiture as a process of visual selection. Rather than reproducing every feature, the artist preserves the details that dominate perception.

In Can Portrait No. 47, posture is inseparable from clothing.

The oversized upper garment creates a broad, sloping silhouette, while the striped wide-leg trousers establish a strong linear rhythm below. Together, they exaggerate the body’s forward direction and make the figure appear both heavy and mobile.

The lowered head adds another layer of compression, drawing the upper body inward while the extended leg pushes the composition outward.

This tension between containment and movement gives the figure its distinctive presence.

Through Can Portrait No. 47, Zheng Hao shows how an ordinary act of walking can become a portrait of identity. A person is preserved not simply by facial features, but through gait, clothing, proportion, and the particular way the body moves through space.

Artwork Story

Can Portrait No. 47 captures a male figure through forward movement, lowered posture, and the exaggerated proportions of contemporary urban clothing. The subject leans into the direction of travel, with the head lowered and one leg extending forward. A broad outer garment creates a long diagonal line through the upper body, while the lower silhouette expands into wide, striped trousers. This combination gives the figure a pronounced sense of weight and momentum. Rather than describing a static pose, Zheng Hao records a body already in transition. The stride, lowered head, oversized clothing, and shifting center of gravity become the primary visual information through which the subject is remembered. Within The Can Archive, people are filtered through the artist’s gaze and transformed into individual visual “cans.” In Can Portrait No. 47, identity is compressed into movement and dress: the way the subject leans, walks, and occupies space becomes more important than conventional facial likeness.

Care Instructions

As an original sketch on paper, this artwork should be displayed and stored with particular attention to light, humidity, and surface protection. Keep the work away from direct sunlight and prolonged exposure to strong artificial light, as excessive UV exposure may gradually discolor the paper and affect the drawn surface. Display the artwork in a stable indoor environment away from excessive humidity, heat, and significant temperature fluctuations. For long-term display, archival-quality matting and backing materials together with UV-protective glazing are recommended. Avoid touching the drawing surface with bare hands. When handling is necessary, hold the sheet carefully by its edges with clean, dry hands or appropriate protective gloves.
