Zheng Hao’s The Can Archive is based on the idea that people are transformed through acts of observation. Across the series, individuals are compressed into selected signs: clothing, silhouette, posture, accessories, or gesture.

In Can Portrait No. 41, the relationship between figures becomes the defining sign.

The two bodies are positioned close together, creating a shared visual mass. Their individual outlines remain legible, yet the composition encourages the viewer to read them as part of a single relational structure.

This introduces a new dimension to the series. Identity is not formed only through isolated personal characteristics; it is also shaped by how people occupy space with others.

The hooded or pointed head silhouettes reinforce the sense of visual pairing while preventing the figures from becoming identical. Similarity and difference coexist within the same composition.

Through Can Portrait No. 41, Zheng Hao considers whether a relationship itself can become a “can”—a compressed record not simply of who two people are, but of how they exist together in a particular moment.

Can Portrait No. 41 expands The Can Archive from the observation of a single individual to the visual relationship between two figures. The composition presents two people seated or crouched close together. Their bodies are simplified into broad, compact forms, while pointed or hood-like head shapes give each figure a distinctive silhouette. Rather than standing independently, the two forms lean into the same visual space. This proximity changes the nature of the portrait. Zheng Hao is no longer preserving only one person’s posture, clothing, or gesture. Instead, the drawing records a relationship: distance, orientation, shared space, and the subtle way two bodies influence one another. Within the artist’s “canning machine” metaphor, Can Portrait No. 41 can be understood as a double record. Two individuals enter the artist’s field of vision at once and are processed not only as separate people, but as a temporary unit. The result is a compact study of companionship, interaction, and shared presence.
