The enlarged lower silhouette changes the scale and balance of the body, making clothing appear almost independent from anatomy. Its rounded form resembles a vessel or container, creating a particularly strong connection with Zheng Hao’s “can” metaphor.

The patterned surface reinforces this effect. Decorative marks spread across the garment like a coded skin, turning the exterior into a field of information through which the figure is recognized.

This transformation blurs the boundary between person and object. The subject remains present, but the body is reorganized by clothing into a new visual structure.

Can Portrait No. 40 captures a female figure through exaggerated garment volume, patterned surface, and a striking contrast between upper-body restraint and lower-body expansion. The upper figure is described with relatively light, economical lines. The head turns slightly to the side, while the torso remains narrow and understated. Below, however, the garment expands dramatically into a rounded, almost balloon-like form. This lower silhouette becomes the central visual event of the drawing. Repeated dots and linear divisions animate the surface, transforming the garment into something between clothing, sculpture, and container. A small pointed shoe emerging from beneath the volume further emphasizes the contrast between the body and the oversized form surrounding it.
