Zheng Hao’s The Can Archive is built around the idea that people are visually compressed through observation. Each portrait retains only selected characteristics, but those characteristics can become amplified in the process.

In Can Portrait No. 39, the amplification occurs through garment structure.

The dramatically widened shoulders and sleeves expand the body beyond natural anatomy, while the vertically striped central section introduces a contrasting sense of order and containment. Together, these elements create a figure that feels simultaneously broad and tightly organized.

This contrast reflects the way fashion can reconstruct the human body. Clothing becomes an external architecture through which identity is staged, controlled, and perceived.

The subject’s frontal stance reinforces this sense of deliberate presentation. Rather than appearing caught in passing, the figure seems consciously arranged within the viewer’s field of vision.

Can Portrait No. 39 captures a female figure through exaggerated garment structure, frontal presence, and a highly controlled fashion silhouette. The subject stands nearly front-facing, with broad shoulders and oversized sleeves expanding dramatically to both sides. At the center, a narrow vertically striped section pulls the eye downward and creates a sharp contrast with the wide upper silhouette. The face is treated with greater emphasis around the eyes, strengthening the figure’s direct presence. Below, the body narrows into long legs and ankle boots, creating a clear transition from expansive volume above to a more restrained lower structure.
