Zheng Hao’s The Can Archive imagines people being processed through the artist’s gaze and transformed into compressed visual records. In each work, certain features survive while others disappear.

In Can Portrait No. 31, the body itself is largely concealed.

The cape-like garment suppresses anatomical detail, while the wide-brimmed hat partially obscures the face. As a result, identity is reconstructed through secondary visual signs: the proportion of the outer silhouette, the angle of the head, the exposed legs, and the distinctive footwear.

This shift challenges conventional portraiture, where the face is usually treated as the central source of recognition. Here, silhouette becomes more important than likeness.

The drawing also extends the series’ interest in clothing as a container. The body appears housed within an external form that both protects and transforms it.

Through Can Portrait No. 31, Zheng Hao shows how a person can remain visually distinct even when much of the body is hidden—suggesting that identity can survive through contour, dress, and posture alone.

Can Portrait No. 31 captures a figure through concealment, silhouette, and a striking combination of hat, cape-like volume, and boots. The subject turns slightly downward beneath a wide-brimmed hat, while the upper body expands into a broad, almost uninterrupted garment shape. Only the lower legs and footwear emerge clearly from beneath this mass, creating a sharp contrast between hidden body and visible detail. Rather than describing anatomy directly, Zheng Hao allows clothing to become the primary structure of the portrait. The wide hat obscures part of the face, while the oversized upper silhouette reduces the torso and arms to a single enveloping form. What remains clearly legible are the head angle, garment volume, trouser legs, and boots. Within The Can Archive, these selected visual signals become the figure’s identifying information. The person is compressed into a memorable combination of concealment and exposure—another unique “can” formed through the artist’s act of looking.
