Zheng Hao’s The Can Archive imagines the artist as a vast canning machine. People enter through his eyes and are processed through observation, memory, and drawing until they become compressed visual forms.

In Can Portrait No. 07, the body itself becomes the primary identifier. The enlarged upper silhouette and vertically striped trousers create a figure that is immediately distinctive even though the face is barely visible.

This approach questions the assumption that portraiture must depend on facial resemblance. Instead, Zheng Hao treats the entire body as a portrait surface. Shape, scale, clothing, proportion, and weight all contribute to the way a person is perceived.

The rounded torso creates a sense of enclosure, while the striped lower half introduces structure and repetition. Together, these elements turn an everyday human figure into a highly recognizable graphic form.

Through this process, the work examines how observation simplifies and exaggerates reality—and how individuality can survive even after a person has been reduced to contour, mass, and rhythm.

Can Portrait No. 07 captures a figure through an exaggerated sense of mass, rounded silhouette, and rear-facing presence. The upper body expands into a broad circular form, while the striped trousers fall vertically beneath it, creating a strong contrast between volume and linear rhythm. Facial detail is almost entirely absent, and the figure is identified instead through body shape, clothing, and posture. This shift away from the face is important within The Can Archive. Zheng Hao’s portraits do not depend on conventional likeness. A person can remain recognizable through proportion, silhouette, dress, and the way the body occupies space. In this work, the body appears almost compressed into a single visual mass. The curved back and oversized torso dominate the composition, while the narrow lower body extends downward in a quieter rhythm. The result is both observational and transformative. Zheng Hao preserves the physical impression of an individual while allowing exaggeration to reshape that impression into a distinct visual type—another unique “can” within the artist’s growing archive of human forms.
