Zheng Hao’s The Can Archive is built around the transformation of people into visual “cans.” Rather than recording every detail of a subject, the artist selects the characteristics that remain most strongly in perception and memory.

In this work, identity is constructed through silhouette and motion.

The side-facing body, loose jacket, striped trousers, and angled feet create an immediate impression of someone moving through an everyday environment. Facial likeness becomes less important than the way the figure occupies and passes through space.

This emphasis on transient observation gives the drawing an urban quality. The subject feels encountered rather than staged—seen briefly, absorbed through the artist’s gaze, and reconstructed afterward through a reduced set of lines.

Through Can Portrait No. 06, Zheng Hao considers how movement itself can become a form of portraiture, and how gesture, clothing, and direction can preserve an individual presence even when facial detail is almost absent.

Can Portrait No. 06 captures a figure in motion through a loose side profile, elongated clothing, and an understated walking gesture. The subject appears to move across the page rather than pose for the artist. A broad outer garment creates a soft upper silhouette, while vertically striped trousers extend the figure downward and emphasize the direction of movement. The head turns slightly away, leaving facial detail secondary to posture and overall form. Zheng Hao reduces the figure to a small number of visual cues: the fall of the hair or headwear, the oversized jacket, the rhythm of the stripes, and the position of the feet. Within The Can Archive, these fragments are enough to become a form of identification. The artist imagines himself as a “canning machine,” receiving people through his eyes and processing them into compact visual records. In Can Portrait No. 06, what is preserved is the fleeting appearance of someone passing through space—a moment of movement compressed into line.
