This original figurative sketch explores posture, compression, and individuality through the seated human figure.

Zheng Hao’s The Can Archive treats portraiture as a process of visual reduction. People enter through the artist’s eyes and are reorganized through memory, observation, and drawing until only selected characteristics remain.

In this work, the seated posture becomes the central source of identity. The bent legs, forward-leaning torso, and turned head create a compact structure in which the figure appears simultaneously relaxed and physically contained.

This compression reflects the broader metaphor of the series. Just as a can contains something within a limited form, the drawing condenses a complex human presence into a small number of lines, gestures, and proportions.

Yet reduction does not erase individuality. Instead, exaggeration makes particular characteristics more visible: the curve of the back, the direction of the gaze, the position of the hands, and the distribution of weight.

Through Can Portrait No. 04, Zheng Hao considers how a person can be visually “contained” while still retaining a distinct sense of presence and character.

Can Portrait No. 04 captures a seated male figure through a compact posture and a strong sense of bodily weight. The subject leans forward with his torso compressed over the legs, while the head turns to the side. Rather than describing the figure through detailed realism, Zheng Hao reduces the body to a few decisive contours that emphasize posture, balance, and physical presence. The seated position creates a different rhythm from the standing figures elsewhere in The Can Archive. Here, the body occupies less vertical space and becomes denser, almost folded into itself. The curved back, bent legs, and grounded feet produce a silhouette that feels compressed yet immediately recognizable. Within Zheng Hao’s “canning machine” concept, each person is filtered through the artist’s gaze and transformed into a distinct visual container. What remains is not every visible detail, but the particular configuration that makes the individual memorable. In Can Portrait No. 04, that defining feature is the body’s compact relationship with space—a moment of stillness transformed into a singular visual type.

Keep the work away from direct sunlight and prolonged exposure to strong artificial light, as excessive UV exposure may gradually discolor the paper and affect the drawn surface. Display the artwork in a stable indoor environment away from excessive humidity, heat, and significant temperature fluctuations. Avoid positioning it near radiators, fireplaces, air-conditioning vents, or damp areas. For long-term display, archival-quality matting and backing materials together with UV-protective glazing are recommended.
