This original figurative sketch belongs to Zheng Hao’s ongoing exploration of observation, individuality, and the transformation of people into visual types.

The artist imagines his creative process as a giant canning machine: people are received through his gaze, processed within his body and memory, and transformed into distinct visual forms.

The metaphor of the “can” suggests both preservation and reduction. A person is infinitely complex, yet the act of drawing inevitably selects, compresses, and reorganizes what is seen. Posture, expression, clothing, proportion, and gesture become the visual information through which a subject is reconstructed.

In this work, the elongated standing body becomes more important than detailed realism. The figure’s tilted head, enclosed hands, and loose clothing create a recognizable character while leaving much of his personal narrative unresolved.

Rather than presenting portraiture as exact representation, Zheng Hao treats drawing as a process of classification and translation. Each sketch becomes a unique container—holding a fragment of a person as filtered through the artist’s perception.

Sketch No. 01 captures a solitary male figure through an economical combination of line, proportion, and gesture. The figure stands with his body slightly tilted, hands gathered near the waist, and his elongated form extending almost the full height of the sheet. Rather than describing every detail, Zheng Hao reduces the subject to a few essential characteristics: posture, clothing, facial structure, and the subtle tension held within the body. This process of reduction is central to the artist’s sketch series. Zheng Hao describes himself as a vast “canning machine.” People enter through his eyes and are processed through observation, memory, and drawing. Each person is gradually transformed into a different “can”—a compressed visual record of individuality that can then be placed on a shelf, or in this case, preserved on paper. In Sketch No. 01, the standing figure becomes one such record. The drawing does not attempt to provide a complete biography of its subject. Instead, it preserves the particular physical presence through which the artist first encountered and remembered him.

As an original sketch on paper, this artwork should be displayed and stored with particular attention to light, humidity, and surface protection. Keep the work away from direct sunlight and prolonged exposure to strong artificial light, as excessive UV exposure may gradually discolor the paper and affect the drawn surface. Display the artwork in a stable indoor environment away from excessive humidity, heat, and significant temperature fluctuations. Avoid positioning it near radiators, fireplaces, air-conditioning vents, or damp areas. For long-term display, archival-quality matting and backing materials together with UV-protective glazing are recommended. The artwork should not come into direct contact with non-archival adhesives or acidic materials. Avoid touching the drawing surface with bare hands. When handling is necessary, carefully hold the sheet by its edges with clean, dry hands or appropriate protective gloves.
