Adrift explores displacement, ecological migration, and adaptation through Cheng Chang’s speculative botanical language.

Created in acrylic on canvas, the work imagines plant-like organisms moving beyond the environments that once defined them. Their forms no longer appear fixed to a single ecological system, suggesting a future in which changing conditions force living organisms to migrate, transform, and establish new relationships with unfamiliar surroundings.

The painting reflects the artist’s broader interest in challenging anthropocentric interpretations of nature. Rather than depicting plants as static elements rooted permanently in place, Adrift presents them as active organisms capable of movement and biological adaptation.

Here, uncertainty becomes productive. Separation from the familiar opens the possibility of mutation, new ecological networks, and unexpected forms of coexistence.

Adrift begins with the image of a living organism separated from familiar ground. Cheng Chang imagines what happens when that stability disappears and an organism is forced into movement. Within this speculative environment, drifting is not simply a loss of direction. It becomes a condition of survival. Organic forms appear to move beyond their original boundaries, searching for new spaces in which to adapt, take root, and continue evolving. The title Adrift reflects this state of uncertainty between departure and arrival. Neither completely displaced nor permanently settled, the imagined organism exists in transition. Through this suspended state, Cheng Chang presents movement as a catalyst for transformation, suggesting that unfamiliar environments may produce entirely new relationships between living beings and the worlds they inhabit.
